The Devil’s Chair - the Chair of the Monk - has captured the imaginations of islanders ever since it was used as a sacrifical location for the godless heathens of the island. Here is our short essay on the matter from our book, Alderney: The Devil’s Rock

7 - The Thing in the Offie

image from googlemaps

For your delectation, the writing up of a very real account of a spectre seen in one of the island’s most cherished drinking establishment, the ‘Corrie’ (The Coronation Inn).

Curiously, this account of a ghost is not the only account we have of the same spectral encounter. Further to this, the pub has a variety of other curious tales and tragedies associated with its past. Some of these are what led our investigation down an altogether darker route as almost revealed in the unpublished ‘Alderney: The Devil’s Rock Vol 2’.

2 - All's Well That Ends In The Well

A hyperbolic retelling of a traditional ghost story from the Trigale area of Alderney.

As with any of these stories, if you recognise the houses in question, please do not disturb the current occupiers. They have enough on their plates just dealing with the phenomenon without the pestering prying of curious persons.

1 - Introducing Alderney

Starting with the opening chapter from the book Alderney: The Devil’s Rock (2010), author Ulysses Black gives the listener an initial insight into some of the strangeness that surrounds this enigmatic island in the English Channel.

The Devil’s Rock project draws on island folklore and mythology, combining it with a weird history of the island, and modern myths and ghost stories. Sometimes drawing on the lighter side of things, and others embracing the dark and chilling, the stories nevertheless are the result of the life-long investigations into the weird and uncanny on our native island.

Artistic license has generally been taken to distill a narrative or to protect informers identities. What remains astounding is that, typically the more bizarre the claims, the more authentic to our investigations they really are.
