2015

Lino Print by Ulysses Black of the sock-monkey version of a feejee-mermaid. Two angler fish with their lures intended to recall the siren song of the mermaid, again re-enforced by the odyssean figureheads pinned to the bows of the ship of love. The composition is also intended to be slightly suggestive of both the Priestess tarot card and the moon.

The design for a digitally engraved table top surface for players to undertake the FoulPlay LEGO Challenge in this years FoulPlay Fantastic Fox Hunt.

Third design for the set of engraved wooden table tops for use by the Farmers within the Brighton Fringe show the FoulPlay Fantastic Fox Hunt. The role of this table is to act as a play area for the Fox and Hounds 'find the lady' three card trick to be played by one of the 'farmer' characters. Bearing in mind the probably desire to use this table and the other two possible different FoulPlay productions, it was chosen to make them sufficiently generic to allow them adaptability to other roles. 

One side of the new official, multi-show money, transferable between any forth-coming FoulPlay show in which in-show money is used. Which seems to be most of them.

The design was intended to hark back to coming-of-age americana and stereotypes, drawing on Grease, Dawson's Creek, the Breakfast Club and John Waters' Cry Baby for thematic inspiration

Revised poster for Octobers showings of Ritual Ritual Ritual. Astute observers will note that the chalk diagrams form the black board choreography as drawn on Blackboard 1 within the 1st lesson, and then subsequently employed throughout the show. October 2013, @ The Basement, Brighton

Flyer for the FoulPlay Halloween Special immersive theatre production 'The Living and the Dead'.

Oui-Ja board design prop for the FoulPlay Halloween Special immersive theatre show. The board came in a purpose made box with instructions for audience members to use as part of the show, triggering future events. The design carries the central 'FoulPlay Chicken' and is surrounded by the four glyphs of the knights. Those familar with FoulPlay productions will be aware that the four knights appear in every show, the knights of chess, the four jockeys of the Office of Correspondence, the four horsemen of the apocalypse in Epoch, and most recently the four knights of the talking board (observant audience noted that their chains are all broken, and speculated on their release should the planchette move over them). The text around the edge of the board is a cycling re-arrangement of the phrase 'the devil makes work for idle hands' (e.g. hands make work for idle devils' and 'idle work is the devils hands') serving as a sinister pun for those whose hands rest on the oui-ja planchette.

Prop for the FoulPlay show Epoch! In the show the company gave away as much free whiskey as the audience cared to drink, as a vital inbuilt timing mechanism within the narrative of the show. What happened when the whiskey ran out?.....

Prop advertisement for the 'snake oil' salesman in the FoulPlay show Epoch! Throughout the show the audience were given more and more in-show money, and being unable to spend it on the free whiskey, ended up being fleeced by the tragic character of the salesman.

Label for the 'other whiskey' as the Sun and Moon (owners of the 'Star and Skull Saloon', in which the audience found themselves) slowly stitched up everyone in the venue...

One of five plates that featured in the Totemic Invocation of the Shadow Selves by Jack Macbeth, 2002. This specific diagram details the role of the 'Black Stone' as central fetish/icon for the ritual. This image dates from 2001.

One of five plates that appear in the Totemic Invocation of the Shadow Selves by Jack Macbeth 2002. This image relates to magical operations of the Black Mirror and the masks of Tezcatlipoca as a force for rending perception (particularly of the self). Note the central motif of the circular black mirror, which would come to be associated with the black disc of the eclipsed sun. Black Mirror features prominently in the Ulysses Black Initiative, as do black circles. This Stelle was created around 1999.

One of five plates from the Totemic Invocation of the Shadow Selves by Jack Macbeth 2002. The various stellae were produced during a long campaign working. This particular piece was made in 1998 and anticipated work regarding the total eclipse of 1999 referenced in both Howlings and The Voyage of Ulysses Black. Both the Black Sun and Black Mirror would become significant symbols in the mythic vocabulary of the artist Ulysses Black / Jack Macbeth

One of five plates that feature within the Totemic Invocation of the Shadow Selves by Jack Macbeth 2002. Each plate describes a specific magical formula, detailed and described in that book. This stelle concerns the acquisition of transformative powers. This image is the oldest of the set and dates from 1996. Note the inverted 7-pointed star over the navel and the specific undulations of the dragon, both of which would eventually morph into the Star and Snake logo of Ulysses Black.
